Equipment
Different Adventures require different things. When you sign up for an Ember Range Adventure we'll send you the complete list of equipment you need to bring for that particular trip, as well as any equipment we have available for you to rent. These general lists will help you get prepared beforehand.
Also, we play D&D with pen and paper. No tablets or phones please! You might have such a device with you on an Enclave (fixed-point Adventure), but we won't use them at the table.
Required for All Adventures
It's important to be able to adjust to changing conditions of the outdoors. We recommend clothes that can be layered as you change from periods of activity to periods of rest. We discourage cotton as it loses heat rapidly when wet. Here's a basic clothing list for all Adventures:
Backpack. Size depends on the type of Adventure. For Enclaves (where we stay in one spot), 20-30 Litres is a good size—but you will need to make sure all of your gear fits inside. Available to rent.
Dice. Should include a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20. Available to rent or buy.
Paper and writing tool. A small notebook with a couple pencils is best.
Boots. Spend some time walking around in your boots before you arrive. They should have good ankle support and tread, with sturdy soles. Ensure they have been waterproofed or have a good waterproof liner material.
Toque. Wool or fleece hat. Available to rent.
Sunhat. Wide brim or baseball style.
Long underwear top and bottoms. Lightweight synthetic or merino wool.
Socks. Preferably a synthetic/merino wool blend. Bring at least three pairs.
Light Synthetic Shirt.
Jacket. Midweight synthetic.
Insulated Coat. Fleece or down.
Rain coat and pants. Waterproof / Breathable; pants should ideally have side zips, so they can be put on without taking off your boots.
Hiking Pants. Preferably windproof and quick drying. No blue jeans or cotton pants.
Light Gloves / Mitts.
Camp shoes. Light Footwear like crocs, double-strap sandals, or running shoes for the occasional creek crossing and use around camp.
Headlamp. With fresh batteries. Available to rent.
Water Bottle / Bladder. 1-2 litre capacity. Available to rent.
Sunscreen & lip balm. Available to buy.
Insect repellent. Available to buy.
Personal first aid kit. Blister bandages/cushions, Band-Aids, painkillers (Tylenol, Advil, etc.), and any medications prescribed by your doctor. I am unable to provide or administer any medication, even Tylenol or Advil, unless it is yours.
Personal toiletries. Keep it all sealed in a Ziploc bag!
Optional:
Dice tray. Keep it lightweight.
Miniature (Mini). For your character. We'll provide otherwise.
Gaiters. We'll let you know if we think you should bring these to keep your feet dry in the early or late season.
Sunglasses.
Camera.
Trekking poles. Available to rent.
Required for Campsite Enclaves
In addition to the "Required for All Adventures" list, this equipment is required for campsite-based Enclaves (where we stay in one spot with tents). We are able to provide tents, but if you have your own please let us know. It should be waterproof, which usually means a separate fly from the tent itself.
Waterproofing. Make sure your backpack itself is water-resistant (you should probably also have a waterproof rain cover for your backpack, and potentially waterproof liners (plastic bags) for inside the backpack.
Sleeping bag. Three-season, rated to -10 C. Available to rent.
Sleeping mat. Therm-a-Rest remains the gold standard. Available to rent.
Required for Expeditions
In addition to the "Required for All Adventures" list, this equipment is required for Expeditions (where we travel from point to point over multiple days). We are able to provide tents, but if you have your own please let us know. It should be waterproof, which usually means a separate fly from the tent itself.
Large Backpack. This should be between 50 and 80 litres capacity depending on your personal gear and length of the Adventure (three days = ~50L; eight days = ~80L). You will need carry your clothing, sleeping bag and mat, plus your share of group camping gear and food (usually 10-20 litres of space). Lightweight packs with good suspension are recommended. If bringing an additional day pack, this should be very light and compressible. Some backpack tops are removable for use as a daypack/fannypack.
Waterproofing. Make sure your backpack itself is water-resistant with a waterproof rain cover, and potentially waterproof liners (plastic bags) for inside.
We will always let you know about backpack size for your particular Adventure!
